My Story
Residency and the Phansi Museum
My current residency is at the Phansi Museum in Glenwood, Durban, which officially began in August 2023. I was initially invited as a facilitator for a two-month ceramic project. Following the success of this initiative—and with Clive Sithole’s support and motivation—the museum offered me the opportunity to become a resident artist. I accepted with great enthusiasm and immediately began my journey with Phansi.
The museum has become an invaluable educational space for me. I have access to a wealth of information related to the broader creative industry, with a special focus on ceramics. It’s also a place where I’ve been able to immerse myself in the rich history of traditional ceramicists, learning how they created timeless works of art using minimal resources.
This residency has given me meaningful exposure within the local and international community. I’ve had the privilege of meeting influential individuals from diverse backgrounds, including international visitors who often pass through my studio. These interactions are not only enriching but also supportive—many visitors purchase small pieces to take home, and seeing my work travel around the world brings me great joy.
Beyond the studio, the museum provides opportunities to participate in various projects hosted within the space. I am grateful to contribute and play a role in helping make these initiatives successful.
My Mentor
It has been an incredible privilege to be trained by and work alongside Clive Sithole, a world-renowned and highly skilled international ceramic artist. Our journey began in July 2021, when I first met Clive and asked if he would be willing to teach me. From that moment, a powerful mentorship began to unfold.
In February 2023, I formally became his apprentice, a role I held until April 2024, when our relationship naturally evolved into one of mentorship. This period of intense learning has opened many doors and opportunities for me within the creative industry.
Clive trained me using traditional, hands-on methods, allowing me to grow through practical experience. He generously shared his academic knowledge, as well as the universal firing and glazing techniques he had acquired through his extensive educational experiences. His guidance extended beyond the studio—offering valuable insights into current market trends and helping me understand where to best position myself within the ceramics industry.
Thanks to his mentorship and encouragement, I now feel ready to walk this path independently. I have since begun creating my own story as a ceramic artist, stepping confidently into the next chapter of my creative journey.
Moving Forward
Looking ahead, I am excited about the potential for continued growth and development within the Phansi Museum. I am committed to adding value to the space and supporting its future endeavours in every way I can.
